At 17 and 15 my sister and I have hyphenated last names from my adopted father. We have no contact with him and want to drop the name legally. How do we do it?

You go to the Social Security office and apply/request for a name change. I believe you need parents signature and a witness and there is a fee (?), your original birth certificate and ss# card. I did this myself when I was about your age(2004). Also I believe a parents needs to be with you too, my mom came along.

You would have to get a lawyer, plus have both of your parents permission to do that. The lawyer would then present it to a judge and he would decide whether to grant or reject your request. When you turn 18, then you can do it on your own, with a lawyer of course. My step-son had this done also......but had to wait because his loser biological father wouldn't agree to it. So when he turned 18, I had it done for him, and let him pick the name and the spelling of his name. Best of luck to you.

your legal guardian/parent must file on behalf of you and your sister.
