My son is 2 months old and hasn't pooped in over 24 hours. Is there a natural remedy (like prunes) that I can give him to help him out? He was on concentrate and we switched to powder which is the culprit we suspect. Needless to say we went back to the concentrate.

Well, i was always worried about my baby when she didnt poop for a long period of time. I went to the doctor with this, and he said it was normal for them not to poop if they have had a sudden change in their diet. So, he told me to wait for about 2 days, and if she still didnt poop, then to give her prunes, or prune juice, and if that didnt work then we would have to resort to baby enemas. Well, the prunes worked like a charm...lol it seemed like about 10 minutes after we fed them to her it was a neverending diaper change...it just kept on coming...lol, so i would feed your son prunes, and that should do the trick!

2 mos. is too young to give prunes. 24 hrs isn't a problem, some babies go three days. He may be getting to the age where he poops less...which is good, less diapers! Give him another 24 hrs, if he still hasn't pooped then try some Karo syrup. Just put some in his bottle. You don't have to measure it or anything, just add a little to some warm water. It won't hurt him so you can add more if needed.
When you give powdered formula you have to stir it up a bit with the scoop to loosen it so it's not packed. And be sure you put the water in the bottle first and then add the loosened formula. If you put 3 scoops of formula in first and then fill the bottle up to the 6 oz mark you will have too much powder and not enough water. If you add the formula to 6 oz. of water then the measurement should end up being more like 7oz. or so.
Too much powder can cause constipation.
You can start giving prunes at 4mos. I found the easiest way is to get the stage 1 baby food (pureed) and add it to some water in a bottle......stay home, or bring LOTS of diapers and wipes.

At two months old it is perfectly normal not to poop every day. Many formula fed babies only poop ever 2-3 days and that is perfectly normal. (Breastfed babies can go up to 7)

The only way to diagnose constipation in babies it to see the firm stool or to have a distended abdomen diagnosed by a doctor. Infrequent pooping is not constipation in babies.

Any treatment for constipation has the possibility of causing diarrhea which is very dangerous under 3 months of age as they can dehydrate so quickly.

Offering juice is not a good plan as their bellies are not ready for it. It can cause an allergic reaction now or even allergies later in life. It can cause temporarily lactose intolerance because juice may damage the intestinal tract. While this heals it may cause lactose intolerance which is hard to deal with.

All liquid sugars (corn syrup, Karo syrup, etc) are potentially infected with botulism spores, not just honey.

You could try a dose of gripe water, it is generally considered safe. However one of the boys in my parenting group got severe diarrhea the two times his mom gave it to him and ended up in the ER once.

I shouldn't even have to say this, but introducing a hard object into the anus is risky.

Honestly I would just wait, his belly will sort itself out unless you change the diaper and there is very firm stool in it. That is the safest course. Infant massage and warm baths are safe treatments as well.

Try prune juice or the prunes in baby food form. Apple juice works as well. But honestely 24 hours isn't a big deal yet!

He is mostly constipated because of the change. If he doesn't poop within another day, I might call the doctor. Hell, I would probably call the doctor now so they can tell you what you might give him. Maybe throw a teaspoon of mineral oil in his bottle.

Anyway, I would start light before moving up to the baby laxatives.

we had the same problem with my nephew not to long and the doctor told us to put 1 tsp of karo syrup in his formula at least 4 times a day and add an extra ounce of water to the formula. when done just that and now he is doing better. you could also use soap and water in a syringe to see if that works. he is too little for a laxative but we used the soap and water with my nephew and he is okay. good luck!!!!

hi, give him more cooled boiled water to drink, and if this doen't help try a bit of prune juice mixed with water. if still noluck try something from the chemist. it may just be that his tummy is trying to process the change in food. it can take longer for the powdered formula to be digested, we had the same problem with our son.
good luck, and i hope you have dirty nappies soon :)

it probably is the change of formula. My baby is so sensitve to change of formula.
You can give him a little bit of diluted apple juice like an ounce of juice and an ounce of water, thats what my doctor told me to do. Don't give him too much though could give him diharrea.
hope i helped..
p.s. (prunes work too but he will explode and it might upset his tummy)
