I have drawn an image in adobe illustrator and now need to open it up in photoshop to do a bit more to it. When I do this the quality of my illustrator image has decreased rapidly and is all pixelated. Is there a way of getting better quality when changing from illustrator to photoshop?

You need to import the Illustrator file into Photoshop using a higher resolution. Since Photoshop is an image editing application opposed to a vector app like Illustrator, your Illustration is going to be converted to pixels. By increasing the resolution high enough you should be able to get the quality you expect.

Steps:
1) Launch Photoshop
2) Choose File > Open
3) Navigate to your Illustrator file and choose open
4) A dialog will appear asking you to specify the resolution and image size for the file.

What resolution you need depends on what you want to do with the file. Try resolutions above 300 dpi for graphics. For line art or text you will probably need 600 dpi.

BTW, Photoshop CS2 also supports something called "smart objects" that let you place Illustrator files inside a PS file in a way that let it be rerasterized when necessary. Search for "photoshop smart objects" for more info.

No, unless your rasterize it at a very high setting.
It will make it a MUCH bigger file, but you will be able to hold some of the quality.
Illustrator is a vector based drawing program.
Photoshop is a pixel editing program.

Pixels and vectors dont convert very well back and forth.
