That is probably the best question that I have seen on Yahoo Answers. It is also probably the hardest to answer. I could say that thoughts just appear, but that isn't always the case, and they are not always willed into existence either. I would have to say the thoughts originate from the same place as our humanity, or our sense of self. Our ability to think into the future and plan our actions, as well as remembering the past, is truly what separates us from the animals. Maybe our thoughts come from our need to be different, or our will to survive. Our early ancestors MUST have started thinking as a survival tool, and now it has evolved into what we all do now.
Sorry I could not have answered this better, but like I said, its a tough one...
But then again, its only a thought.

Neural Activity.
Brains learn. Of course. From what we know of neuronal structures, one way brains learn is by altering the strengths of connections between neurons, and by adding or deleting connections between neurons. Furthermore, they learn "on-line", based on experience, and typically without the benefit of a benevolent teacher.
The efficacy of a synapse can change as a result of experience, providing both memory and learning through long-term potentiation. One way this happens is through release of more neurotransmitter. Many other changes may also be involved.

Your body picks up on the 5 senses and then brings it into your sensory memory. If you find it interesting or curious then your brain will bring it into working memory. What you do with it from there is up to you. You only have 3 second of memory.
Sensory, Working and Long Term.
It's very interesting.
