since there must be other people who only travel once in a while do they take cash or do you have to buy a charlie card?

You have to have a Charlie card to take the train (subway, metro). The new revolving doors (autmatic sliding doors) will not let you pass through, there are no coins slot.
The bus might accept dollar bills only, no coins as usual. But they still have the card reader.

You need to buy a charlie card - but you can purchase it for the amount that you will need to travel that day. You will see the machines throughout the station.
