Does someone have to physically hit the away message on AIM for the Away to appear or can it appear after a certain amount of time? I was trying to talk to someone online for about 17 minutes. No response. Then it said their screen name "went away". Did they have to actually hit that button to go away or could they have just gone idle? I want to know if I was being ignored.

you probably weren't being ignored, however AIM screen names do go "idle" after a while if AIM hasn't been used in about 15 minutes

You might have gotten an Idle message...if there is no activity on that computer for 15 minutes, it will go idle and put up a default away message.
