In LA proper?

J. Paul Getty Museum (off of the 405 freeway)

J. Paul Getty Villa (off of Pacific Coast Highway, in Malibu) (I think reservations are required.

Malibu Beach, or any of the beaches north of Santa Monica

Griffith Observatory and Planetarium (reservations are required. I think I heard they are booked until February, but it is worth a shot. It has been totally revamped and modernized.)

A nice dinner at any of the fine restaurants on Fairfax Avenue, near Melrose and Beverly Blvd (also known as Restaurant Row.) Also in this area you will find lots of quaint and unique shops.

A nice lunch at any of the sidewalk restaurants on Sunset Blvd, west Los Angeles.

Catch a play or musical at any of the fine venues (Kodak, Pantages).

Catch a comedy show at the Comedy Store, or the Laugh Factory.

Catch a concert at the Billboard, or House of Blues. These are small, intimate venues.

Mann's Chinese Theater, and Hollywood Blvd. Yes, it is cliche, and typical tourist trap, but it is a must if you have never been there. A lot of improvements have been made.

Downtown Los Angeles, and Olvera Street. More there than you realize. Pershing Square, all of the high rise buildings, a little bit of history - including the original City of Los Angeles and Mission. You can check out Union Station, which is a great example of 1920s Arte Nouveau architecture, LA County courthouse, (the site of the infamous OJ trial), Little Tokyo, the Angels Flight tram, that takes you up a hillside through a neighborhood of historic homes. Down the ways on Wilshire is Koreatown.

If you like Thai food, you must go to Thai Town, a mile long strip along Hollywood boulevard between Normandy and Western avenues.

You will probably want to check out the Farmers market on 3rd and Fairfax. It is an assortment of delis and gourmet food shops. While you are there, have lunch at Dupars. Don't be suprised if you run into some celebrities as CBS Studios is right next to the Farmer's market.

Have a hot dog at Pink's on La Brea. It is a favorite hang out for celebrities, not too mention it serves up the very best hot dogs in the world.

Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

Have a cocktail in the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown. The restaurant on the top floor rotates, giving you spectacular views of downtown.

If youthful clubs are your thing, go to the Viper Room or The Garden of Eden.

These are just off of the top of my head.

I am assuming you already know about Disneyland, Universal Studios... blah, blah, blah.

Places you must see (don't forget to rent a car, or make sure someone in your group has a car....there is no other way to get around LA without one.:

The Grove (dining/shopping)

Melrose (shopping)

Rodeo Drive (shopping)

3rd Street Promenade (dining/shopping)

Universal Citywalk (even if you don't go to Universal Studios, the Citywalk is a GREAT place to hang out, eat, and shop)

Malibu Beach (just drive along the Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Monica...it's the best drive you'll take)

John Paul Getty Museum (near West L.A.)

Topanga Plaza (the best mall in Los Angeles...but it's in the Valley...worth the drive though)

Good luck, and enjoy!

There are a lot of great places listed already, but since this is in the "Dining Out" forum, let me suggest some not so typical local places to check out, food and drink wise. I'll stay away from fine dining, cuz you can find that anywhere.

Tommy's Burgers (Chili burgers & dogs - go to the original on Beverly & Rampart)
The Original Pantry (Great comfort food - 9th & Figueroa)
Pink's (hot dogs - La Brea just north of Melrose)
Tiki Ti (bar - on Sunset next to the KCET studio)
Any of the little restaurants/stands at Venice Beach
In n Out (burgers - multiple locations)

Keep checking back, I'll add more as they come to mind.

If you are in Hollywood, be sure to visit Amoeba. It's the largest store for CDs, DVDs, vinyls, posters... it's a musician's mecca. Just about anyone can get lost for hours in there.
Venice Beach is always fun - great for people watching!
If you're into art, there is a Megritte exhibit being held at LACMA... amazing!
