I have read that it is better to start off in a higher gear to decrease torque and the wheels will not tend to spin as much. But the same documents suggest dropping to a lower drive like D1 or D2 on an automatic ???? what difference does it make on an Automatic? It will always start in the lowest gear and work its way up?? Seems to me there is no way to force it to start in a higher gear?

The only thing D1 and D2 do is limit what gear your car will reach. You still start in first gear.
Now, if you have a vehicle with an automatic and the 'sports shifter' kind of stuff you can start of in 2nd and it does help.
We do that in our 06 beetle.

Leave it in 2nd gear. The vehicle uses the most torque in 1st gear. This is because the engine has to start moving the car, once the car is moving less torque is need because it's already in motion.

But you don't have a 5spd, so leaving it in 2 or D2 would be best.

You need to put the car in D1 or D2, this stops the car from changing gear. The problem when trying to move in snow is that as the car makes progress, it shifts gear and breaks traction.

Leave it in D2, it gives you more progressive power.
