Ok this definition is a bit naff but here goes:

They store little bits of information about you, such as how a what your preferences are on a certain website or something. They are not all bad: some are good e.g. when you have a personalised Google page (forgive me Yahoo). However most cookies are "tracking cookies" and they send back info of what websites you've visited.... to companies willing to pay for that data to decide where to advertise (for example).

My best advice to you is from time to time go through your cookies and delete the ones you dont want, or just put your security settings higher. Around once a fortnight or two, delete all your cookies to be on the safe side.

The normal use of cookies is to store a very small protion of information such as a user name. This can then be used by the "remember me" part of a website.

Other cookies are used to track you activities around the internet. You can disable cookies in your browser if you are concerned but then some sites may not work for you.

They store information on your computer such as passwords and page preferences, like when you log into yahoo and it remembered your username that is a cookie doing that.
