Water - We often perceive liquid water (H2O) to be ordinary as it is transparent, odorless, tasteless and ubiquitous. It is the simplest compound of the two most common reactive elements in the Universe, consisting of just two hydrogen atoms attached to a single oxygen atom. Indeed, very few molecules are smaller or lighter.

Water is the most studied material on Earth but it is remarkable to find that its behavior and function are so poorly understood (or even ignored), not only by people in general, but also by scientists working with it everyday. The size of the water molecule belies the complexity of its actions and its singular capabilities. Water's unique properties and chameleonic nature seem to fit ideally into the requirements for life as can no other molecule.

A number of explanations of the complex behavior of liquid water have been published, many quite recently, with several stirring up great controversy.

About 70% of the Earth is covered with water, and 97% of that is part of the salty oceans. Only a small portion of the Earth's water is freshwater. This includes such things as rivers, lakes, and groundwater. In fact if you photograph Earth at just the right spot, the entire surface looks covered by water! How much of that is fresh water? Not much, only three percent of all the water on the planet is fresh water. Hope this helps

Hydrogen, because oxygen is not necessarily a liquid. Both of which, when combined, form water.
