I think art, in the first place, does not exist without passion and "mood". I think there is always some kind of psychological connection between creating arts and the mood of the artist. Also there is always connection between the lifestyle, way of thinking of the artist to her artwork. That's why art is also used in therapy nowadays. There are different types of art works. The meaning of representational art works are pretty straight forward whereas the meaning of abstract art is a matter of interpretation of the beholder.

I think that is a totally ridiculous statement.

Art is never meaningless. Lots of great art is done without passion or hope.

I agree with Boiler. It's not the art or the artist's vision, passion, hope, whatever that makes it "meaningful." It's the receiver, the audience that gives art its place in the world.

Art has meaning to each individual person. I am an Art Major, and I am a firm believer that to really appreciate your work as an artist, you need to put your own heart into it.

But there are plenty of work that is just thrown together, and the audience still finds meaning in it.

Art is an individual experience.

The art of creating is more meaningful than the art itself.

All sentiments from viewers of art mean nothing to the artist who has to struggle to understand why he feels the need create; for who is he creating and why?

If you existed in pitch black nothingness, you wouldn't know you existed unless something else existed. Like time. Everything needs something else for it to have meaning. Picasso was just a man that created until someone said, "this ART means something to me". Picasso knew it wouldn't mean what it meant to him. But the other person's validation gave it its value.
