You study what you want in college, but there are required courses for med school you'll have to take.

Yes, med school is tough. After med school, you do a year of internship and then about 3 years of residency.

An anesthesiologist does a very risky part of surgery. They administer the stuff to knock patients out so they won't feel pain during surgery. It's really dangerous because too much can kill, too little and they'll wake up in the middle of the surgery. They're there prior to the surgery getting the patient ready, and they're there afterwards to make sure they come out of it ok.

You're talking 16 hour days straight, with no break. Sometimes longer. No lunch, no bathroom break sometimes. Malpractice insurance is through the roof because their job is so risky. If they screw up, they don't maim. Not sure where the other person got that, but people do die. That's why they say every surgery is a risk. Surgery always has pressure.

They make a good bit of money. $200K-$600K is common. It really depends on where you're working, who you're working for, and how many days a week you work. I know one who just got started after finishing residency. He's getting over $300K, but the company is paying for his malpractice insurance. My buddy has a cousin and that cousin's spouse who are both anesthesiologists and they make around the $500K range, but I take it they work more for themselves.

I'm just a little curious as to why you want to become one if you're not quite sure what one does. Is it just for the money? It's not the highest paying doctor job. If all you want is money, look into cardiology surgery or neurosurgery.
