Most doctors don't attempt to hear the heartbeat with a fetal Doppler until about 12 weeks because whether you can hear it before then is hit or miss. Many times it can be heart earlier, but you shouldn't worry if not. (Most doctors wait because they don't want their patients to freak out if the heartbeat can't be heard yet.)

Home Doppler rentals is a pretty big business; most women I know didn't try until 10 or 11 weeks to find the heartbeat. I believe I waited until 11 1/2 weeks -- it took me a few tries (I kept thinking my own heartbeat was one of the babies) but I did find it at that time.

If the woman is very overweight there may be difficulty finding the heartbeat -- that doesn't mean there's a problem with cardiac activity, though. Placental position can also be a factor, and women with an anterior placenta (the placenta is in the front of the uterus, toward the belly button basically, rather than at the back of the uterus toward the spine) often have difficulty finding the heartbeat.

Using ultrasound equipment, cardiac activity can be seen much earlier (generally by about 6 weeks).

You can hear the heart beat when you are about 3 months along if I remember correctly. It is an awesome experience when you hear that for the first time.

I was 10 weeks pregnant and they heard the babie's heartbeat loud and clear. It was perfect. In fact, they didn't even tell me they were looking for a heart beat sound and all of a sudden "du dum du dum du dum" they put it on speaker and surprised me. It was amazing. As long as they can see a heart beat, you're fine.

I am a mother of 3, and it is usually around 12 weeks when you can actually hear the heartbeat at your appointment. I think they may say around 11 weeks but it is very faint.

it depends on the babys position. For me it was probably at my 3 month appt. They tried at 2 months but did not pick anything up. When you hear it you wont believe it, it will give ya goosebumps.
