I do not believe it is sad.
France and Germany also have increased their power within the European Commission. I rather think that these Great Powers are stronger and are taking advantage of the EU body rather than as a single country against US, China...
EU construction was successful on many aspects: it has avoided wars in the EU for over 50 years, it has enabled growth, it has open free movements of people, capital and goods & services in 27 countries.
We better know our neighbours without having lost our mother nation. I feel Belgian before being European and I think it is same for others EU nationals.
Now it is true that there are still rigidities and some waste of money but for me the evaluation is rather positive.
