in this day and age .. there is nothing left to the imagination so these lazy writers of the networks decided to stick a bunch of surveilance cameras all over houses and follow people around to get their reactions and then edit the hell out of them.. so there really is not reality in the reality show... in the 90's it was all about the talk show. this decade its the reality show... what is going to be the hype in the next decade? my 7 yr old has some real good ideas.. but i wouldn't share them.. some of those execs at nbc might be watching..

I have no idea other than it is a poorly chosen name for the genre. I suppose its intent is to suggest that its not contrived, but I agree with you. It is clearly contrived. As to the bonus question, I suspect that he thinks that people in the other board know more about the answer to your question than do philosophers. He may very well have a point there. Some folks in this philosophy board have a purest attitude as to the sort of question that is asked here and you must admit that a question about the name of a television genre has little to do with philosophy.

They call it that cause they use random people to star in it and because they tape every movement they take during the program

No I do not, but reality show is an oxy moron there is nothing real about them. I like the term my daughter uses; "stupid shows"! But then each their own!
