The identity of "The Girl", and her ultimate significance to Corso, remain a matter of debate and speculation among the film's fans; however, at the last part of the film, it is indicated the girl is the "Whore of Babylon." Whether it is a good picture is all subjective based on a person's own tastes. At the end, Corso is going into that castle to complete the deal with the devil, because he has all the correct pages to the puzzle. While I, personally, liked it well enough and have watched it two, maybe three, times, it is not, nor was rated as the best movie Roman Polanski could have done.

Yes, the girl was the devil. Johnny Depp's character is the one that the devil really wanted to have the knowledge - not the Frank Langella character. So in the end he accepts satan and the ninth gate opens for hell to come on earth.

I like the movie - it's contrived and I think Emannuelle Seigner is a TERRIBLE actress. But it is like a fun, metaphysical detective story a little.

Give it a try, nothing to lose.

I found her character to be alternately annoying (her know-it-all aloofness and cloying evasiveness) and terrifying (when she literally rapes Johnny Depp). Yes, there was convenient plot twists shoehorned into the script, but the problem most fans and critics had was the absence of candid information that they just sat for two-plus hours to have disclosed. Hell, Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby also featured ambiguous endings, but nobody complained about that! Use your imagination; Corso's fate can be either unimaginably glorious, or unthinkably grim.

The girl was the devil or something like it, but it was never confirmed at any point. The picture meant he had found the last piece of the jigsaw and he could become imortal. Roman Polanski could know for sure. (the director). It was a good film
