Last year a friend had her many uterine fibroids removed laparascopically. It was a two-hour procedure. The fibroids were dissolved inside her and then sucked out through a tube, so she didn't have to have incisions -- just small openings in her abdomen for the tube. She was walking around the next day and went back to work the day after that. She's very happy to be rid of them. Find a surgeon who has done many of these and perhaps talk to a patient or two who has had the procedure.

Losing weight has nothing to do with fibroid tumors of the uterus. They tend to grow with age and thus make the uterus larger. This makes more blood and tissue to discard at the time of your period, which may hurt a little more. The only way to get rid of fibroids is through surgery - laser or by cutting them out. They are benign and usually don't cause any complications other than discomfort or heavy menstrual flow. Something like 75 of women get them before the age of 40.
