Tony Gwynn only got 97.6 % of the votes.
Cal Ripken Jr only got 98.5%.

My question is why would you not vote for Gwynn or Ripken?

nas8car, I agree with you, I understand they did it to protest the current steroid era, but there are still plenty of deserving players who are not suspected of cheating. I can see not voting for mcgwire, but why not throw JIm Rice or Goose Gossage the vote if you are just going to waste your ballot.

Felix, I agree with that also, that why I think voting should be done by current members of the HOF and not writers.

Scotsmen, I try, but this isn't really the best forum to lay on the abuse. Too many crybabies and humorless twits. I've had so many answers and questions deleted I'm not really sure what I can and can't say, of course that usually doesn't stop me from saying whatever I want. I can deal with the lost points, they're meaningless anyway.

I'm confused about all the arguements about whether or not steroid "users" should be in the hall of fame or not. Cooperstown was created as a museum for baseball. The definition of a museum is an institution that celebrates events (good or bad) in whatever topic the museum is fashioned for. To have a museum not include people because of something they might have done wrong, is to pretend like the event never happened. It would be like the Museum of Modern History creating a World War 2 Exhibit and forgetting to mention anything about Hitler.
They should be in the HoF because they are a part of the game and its history.

That being said, no one should have suffered writers half hearted attempts at chivalry by not voting at all. You vote for Ripken and Gwynn for who they were as a player, their stats, contributions to the game, and how they rate against other HOFers.

I think Gwynn and Ripken both deffinatly deserved it. And I'm happy for them.

The writers who got ballots and submitted the empty ballots I agree shouldn't be allowed to vote again.

I also agree with what someone else said, that the current living members of the HOF should vote on who gets in.

The fact that nobody has ever gotten 100% of the votes should tell you something. How do you not vote for Willie Mays, Stan Musial, Nolan Ryan? Some writers are just pompous jerks who refuse to write guys on the first ballot.

Yes, because baseball is a lame duck American sport now. The players have completely made a mockery of a traditional pastime in this country which used to have a symbolic meaning to those who loved the game.

probably to keep them from getting a higher % of votes than previous superstars of baseball. Did they deserve better distinction than say Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Lou Gherig...

They are fantastic examples of what is so right about Baseball, but they are meer mortals in the end.

Well, well, well... I see that you like to infuriate the masses as well, what with this and other questions of yours. In truth, we should be tag-teaming these humorless simpletons on Yahoo, not bickering amongst ourselves.
