I am disabled and have a chronic illness. I had to go on foodstamps 13 years ago when I left an abusive marriage, had no income, could not work, and had four children at home.

We were on them a few years, then as the children grew into mid-older teens, they got jobs, and I got on disability, and we went off of them. I tried to stay off of any assistance besides the disability, but as my kids left home, taking of course, their income with them, I ended up losing my home, although I tried hard to keep it.

I moved into a travel trailer, but my $550 a month disability income just barely covered space rent and car insurance, so I had to go on them again until I made some new life choices that improved my circumstances.

Yes, about 9 years ago, my husband of 9 years just up & left. No warning or anything. Come to find out he'd had a girlfriend for over a year. I was so naive!
I was a stay at home mom at the time. I applied for food stamps and started job hunting the next day. I didn't stay on them for long, just about 6 months until I found a job making more money than the first one paid.

Yes..... Same reasons as Pichi (above). I'd probably still be on them now. Except that my ex lives with me now and that makes me ineligible for f.s. assistance. Which is kind of sad, because we're not married and he is 100 % disabled and can no longer work. Having them would make things easier on me. But honestly, I do not miss them or having to apply for them.
