In the 1900's there were 3 progressives president. Roosevelt, taft, and Wilson. These three men made many changes in terms of making society and our environment better. They passed child labor laws, helped unions, trust-busted, set land aside for environmental conservation, and what not. hopefull this helps.

With great optimism and faith in scientific efficiency, reform set out to conquer the negative effects of industrialization and rapid urbanization, unsafe working conditions, long work hours, poor wages, child labor, and slum housing to name a few.

The 50's were good if you were white, male and well employed. For the other 3/4 of the population (women and minorities) not so much. Not to say there weren't great things about the era, it was safer, kids could play outside, and they did- many homes did not even have TV. But you are blocking out the negatives, and there were many. PS- The "greedy pig of a woman" suing kind of gives your mindset away.
