Ok I'm guessing its an up to 8mb service, these automatically adjust to give the fastest speed and there will be some variation.
Internet speed can vary according to time of day, at peak times it can drop. Also if you have any other programs running on your PC that access the internet while doing the test this can also cause a variation.
To be honest this doesn't look too bad I'm on orange and seen my BB drop from around 1800kbps to around 100 at times. Never stays that low for long though.
If you sign up for http://www.thinkbroadband.com you can save the results of the speed test to see how things go over time

Umm, what kind of broadband do you have? DSL, Cable, Satellite? Knowing that would help.
However, you should know that the time of day and the number of people around you (if you have cable) in your neighborhood are all important factors.
Don't forget that speed isn't just your broadband connection. Once you retrieve something out on the internet, other things come into play. The site you're downloading from might be far away, or there's a lot of traffic in between your location and that site. Traffic changes often, so that's why you see different results all the time.
I strongly urge you to post as much detail as you can in the future about what you're trying to do and what you have.

I am with Pipex too and I have been having the same problem over the last few days. I don't know if there is any maintenance on the site or if it is volume of traffic, or even if there have been loads of new customers signing up and all of them are trying to go online at once. It could be any or all of these things. It's not easy to tell.

Broadband speed is affected by many reasons such as demand and technical issues so it is perfectly normal for your bandwidth speed to varie.

It's like being on the M25 at Midnight, 3am, 6am, 9am etc. The more traffic the slower you go.
