How can I assess Siegfried Sassoon's criticisms of WW1? What does it mean?

To assess means to value the significance, or extent of something. In this case you'd be using your judgment about Sassoon's poetry to decide whether his poetry was right to criticize WWI or not. Did he have good cause, was he just bitter, why was he that way, etc etc. Look at his work, look at the history of the war and see how they compare. Was he truthful with what he wrote, or did his own feelings twist actual events?

Start with comparing facts and depending upon what you find out there, conclude with your opinion and thoughts.
