and if so what did you do? Do you ask the person what did they mean by that or do you just take it at face value?

Yes I have gotten a compliment that was actually an insult. I let the person know that she insulted me and told her to be straight next time and not to put her insults in a half a**ed compliment.
When you let a person know they're being rude and insulting it usually sets the tone that you don't allow that kind of behavior.

There are insults hidden in compliments, pure insults. But if you mean a compliment that could have an insult in it, almost by accident, then sure:
'You've lost weight.' I'm not skinny, but I'm not that fat, and I didn't loose any weight. So I said to her 'Are you saying I had weight to loose in the first place?', but I was only messing, I didn't care.

My brother was told once 'You're so cool (compliment) because you don't care what people think of you (insult?).'

i take it at face value just to be the bigger person

but im an over-analyser so there may have been no purposeful hint of an insult in the first place

They're called "back-handed compliments", and it's just best to let them pass - the person giving them knows full well there's an insult hidden in them, and I find it best not to give them the satisfaction of taking the bait.

My ex-mother in law did that all the time. She would say things like oh your hair looks so much better today. I would think "did it look bad last time I saw you"? Or when I bought new furniture she said "It looks cute, you could save up for nice furniture later." What a witch! I said nothing until I was going through my divorce then I said it all!

stuff like "at least you got a pretty face"

just take it at face value and later on write that person's name down down in a tiny notebook of people to kill if you ever go on a crazed massacre.

Every time my mother-in-law speaks to me.
When called on the carpet she insists she didn't mean it "that" way.
I avoid her, after nearly 30 years it seems to be the best way to handle the thing. (It took just 20 years for me to come to that decision and believe I honestly wasn't fueling the fire~my husband convinced me of that.)

Grassy's comments should be taken as an compliment and the other just ignore as its unintended. Grassy thinks you are wonderful and nice

A co-worker told me I'm all prim and proper - I thought I was very down to earth so I was surprised to hear that. I haven't spoken to her since other then the normal "hello, how are you" civil stuff.
