My husband bought me a laptop for xmas. I would like you set it up for wireless, I don't have DSL or Cable internet service where I ive. I am currently on dail up. Can I get a router and still use the dail up and be wireless? I am planning on getting a wireless card in the near future just want a quick fix would this work. Stupid question just confused. about how it works. True answers only.

I think you'll need to get Cable or DSL. Most routers take an cord called an ethernet cordn to split the signal into wireless and share it amongst pcs....and most ethernet cords come out of cable and dsl modems.

You can also get a wireless USB transmitter like this one.

A wireless router needs RJ45 connection which only works with broadband or DSL. Dial up is too slow to share.

No a router will NOT work with dial up is only works with cable ,satellite, DSL. I don't really know if it will work with dsl cause it has a phone line.

It can be setup to work.

Your desktop computer would handle the dial up connection to the internet and then the router would then be connected to your desktop computer via the network card. Your desktop pc would need to have internet connection sharing configured to allow this connection. Now when doing this you would then be sharing the slow dial up connection you already have with the one computer between both. Meaning that you are taking your 14KB to 36KB dial up speed on one computer and now having 7KB to 18 KB speed on 2 computers. Honestly not worth the time to setup. Good Luck.

then you are stuffed. The router cannot dial out.
