Soviet Union disintegrated in 1991. It no longer exists. Russia is just a country now. But if you are in a time warp and living sometime in the 80s then ya, it is in the Soviet Union.

Russia began the soviet union, when it decided to expand itself. This was probably round about the 19th century. (it had expanded in the past, many moons before this period, but it is the most recent)
It also encompassed places such as czeckoslovakia, as an example.
This place, has now reverted back to what it once was, with the czeck part, now being known as the czeck republic, and slovakia, being called er slovakia!!. lol.
The soviet union is best remembered, for it being the big grizzly bear on the eastern horizon, when it had its famous stand off against the west. Known as the cold war.
