I am working on a yearbook page using Adobe Indesign and I want to "cut" out an image of a person to use for a backround. Is it possible using Adobe photoshop? if so, please explain step by step if possible.

The easiest way is to try to use the 'magic wand' tool. Click outside the person, and see what it selects. If the background is fairly uniform, it will often isolate the person. You can hold down shift and click a few more times if it missed a few spots. Then you can delete the background, or invert the selection and copy the person.

If the background is too busy and the magic wand doesn't work, you will have to cut the person out manually using the marquee tool (the lasso).

The easiest way is to paint a reproduction/continuation of the background where the person is. Are they making it easy for you by standing in front of a curtain or wall or screen, or are you going to have to substitute something else? Perhaps even someone else?

Try putting the person you want to eliminate on a layer, which, once you're satisfied with what you can do to replace him, you can then delete that layer and the background you have prepared replaces him.

Yes its possible.

You can use the Filter > Extract to do so.
You use the highlighter and highlight hte edge of the subject you want to cut out. Then use the Fill to fill in the areas you want to keep.

then extract.

Use the lasso tool. Copy, & paste into a new file, or ctrl/command shift i (invert) and delete the background.
