Yes you can, but it is a lil complicated process to do and it involves third party software. Operating the ipod from a disk mode, and putting songs into the right folder. Or you can spend an awful long time recording songs via a miciput device that can be bout for the ipod. The simpliest way is itunes.

I think you are questioning whether you have to purchase the songs from itunes, which you don't. Itunes only only acts a a medium for the transfer.

No. You need iTunes to import songs onto your iPod, whether you're downloading songs you purchased on iTunes or transferring songs from CDs.
