the first game like that for atari was centipede. millipede was similar and came later

this game was also remade for the gameboy advance - [http://gameboy.ign.com/objects/017/017240.html ]

i had a game on intellevision that was called 'astrosmash' where you are a little space ship or something that would shoot various sized and colored objects that fell from the sky. there was a thing called hyperspace that would make you go really fast, and you never knew where you would be when you stopped, so it didn't always help. asteroids, as mentioned elsewhere on this page, was a game before astrosmash that has you as a space ship that can pilot arond the screen. it moved more like a steering wheel though, holding left would make it turn to the left, but not move to the left.
