I had someone to call in for me because I was unable to do so. I later called in and was approved for vacation time. This is a common practice.

I DON'T SEE A PROBLEM. WOULD YOU RATHER THEY NOT APPROVE YOUR TIME ? I DON'T GET WHAT YOUR BEEF IS ? VACATION TIME, SICK TIME AS LONG AS THEY PAY YOU WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE ?

Well, if you don't get paid for sick days, maybe the assumed you'd want to be paid for that time?

I'm not sure if your company will consider this a breech of trust, but it's definitely questionable ethics.
