I like both versions for different reasons, but I'll vote for classic Diamond Dave. He just gave his entire self into every performance. The vocal acrobatics, the jumping around, the attitude, the CHARISMA; he was just a lot of FUN. David Lee Roth is also Van Halen's first, and therefore the one that all others must be measured against.

Sammy was a fine singer and solo artist, and he helped bring the band's popularity to an even higher level with a tighter, poppier sound, so I don't want to discount him too much either.

The only VH singer I didn't care for would be Gary Cherone. Gary's talented, but it just didn't seem a very good fit for the Van Halen brothers.

I really enjoy Van Halen with both Diamond Dave and Sammy as a front man but if I had to pick, it would be Van Hagar.

Van Halen all the way. While Sammy is a good songwriter and great solo artist, there is only one Van Halen and that's the one with David Lee Roth. He was there in the beginning. He was the one who helped put them on the map.

Van Halen, although I really don't like David Lee Roth. But they were better with him than Sammy.
