Perhaps it is believed (rightly or wrongly) that it is impossible to have any sort of intelligent dialogue with someone who posts a question that is rude as well as off putting. Sometimes it is better (and easier) to ignore it, but when it becomes a "cause" for particular people to be repeatedly shocking, folks resort to reporting them.
When answering questions, no dialogue is possible as it is only one sided.
Great question!

Those are your emotions working without the benefit of intellect.
There is a huge difference between discussing an
offensive topic, and looking at, or reading about some
vulgar issues. Some people can not, or do not know
how to, draw the line between proper and improper
subject matter. Offensive and vulgar are vastly
different to me.
Welcome to Yahoo..............Your first question is great.

For those who write offensive material you couldnt talk to them they are obvious unable to live or think any other way then they have been brainwashed to think
If i was to sit and talk with someone like LULU or KKJEWHATEVER i think i would be hysterically laughing of course i would try to help them explore the concept of thinking outside the box society has given but im certain they would be the kind to throw a mega kindergarden sissy fit proclaiming themselves right
sorry dude but people like these cant think for thenselves they can only go through life seeing the evil in everything and everyone

The guidelines were set up to help people understand what kind of forum they are getting into. Yahoo doesn't want offensive content because this is what they promised and this is what people expect. There are plenty of forums who don't care about offensive content - go there instead. Otherwise expect to be reported. Simple.

I disagree, to an extent. If a person asks a valid question (depends on your definition) I think it is fine. I will report a person who asks a question along these lines "Who thinks all N***ers and just overgrown monkeys and should be put back in to slavery?" This is a question that I feel should not be here.
The above question is made to insult, degrade and piss people off. That is not what this site should be about.

These forums have rules.
Yahoo owns the servers and therefore they can decide what is allowed and what is not.
That said...
Generally, the people who post offensive comments have no desire for true conversation on the subject. There is little point in trying to explain why they should think differently.
If someone is trying to insult, it is best to simply report them and not respond.

Fear of or respect for (that's a fine line sometimes) another person's:
Feelings
Freedoms
Opinions
Morals
Ethics
The manner in which they were raised
Culture
Environment
And many more.
Most of us are taught at a very young age that to get along with others and to receive respectful treatment from others, we must respect their own beliefs and feelings. This is what we must do to be a productive society -- respect each other. Even if we do disagree, respectfully disagree. Our manners should prevent us from being overly confrontational and contentious. Not everyone sees it like that. Their own rights and freedoms are primary with everyone else's falling into the secondary category.

Because most people are looking out for the younger people that are on Y!A.
A web site should be designed to where just adults can go on and discuss what ever they want openly and not have to worry about under age children getting on the site.

The majority of those things that are offensive are not asked to be answered, they are asked to be insulting. There are ways to ask questions about things that might be considered offensive by some without offending anyone.

You have just stated the basis premise of the idea of "free speech". I agree. What better way to expose the ignorance of certain ideas than to discuss them?
