which are already being used to cure diseases?

Why is Congress so eager to normalize the killing of unborn humans for their body parts? What sort of grisly mindset compels these legislators to believe it’s ethical to kill one human to benefit another? Is it because the embryo can’t donate, scream, protest, or picket? How can a civilized society accept the high-tech cannibalism involved in the deliberate killing of a human embryo to harvest its parts?

Perhaps our Congressmen should research the horrific practice in Communist China of killing political prisoners for their body parts. The same logic applies to the killing of unborn embryos for their parts. Does anyone have a good answer? I don't want my tax dollars going to fund this practice. There if enough private funds (BILLIONS) available for this. Thoughts?

Sorry Amy D-but when a baby DIES INUTERO their tissues are not viable for anything. The death of your friend's baby did not benefit anyone (although she may have offered). How do I know? Same thing happened to ME-I offered hoping something good could come of my tragedy--and was told by the time the baby is delivered anything of value will have deteriorated.

I suspect that those who would advocate embryonic stem cell research are the same folks who, just a few years ago, claimed that the embryo was a non-entity with no human rights.

No, they suddenly view them as ultra-valuable despite the many years of failure with embryonic stem cells.

Massive inconsistency? Of course.

_______

Response to Existence:

Over 70 treatments/cures have been discovered with ADULT stem cells.

ZERO treatments/cures have been discovered with EMBRYONIC stem cells.

And NPR is quite liberal. You're deluding yourself to think that it's not.

My question is if the embryonic stem cell issue is not about abortion then what excuse is there to explain continuing this unproductive line of research? I am not against any type of research, but to date the only promising results have come from adult stem cells. Further, why do supporters continually present the idea that this research is illegal? It is not illegal, it just cannot be funded with federal grant money. Another good question is if Embryonic Stem Cell research is so promising why is there almost zero in private investment? Where are the drug companies who will spend billions to make us smile, but not a penny on possible cures which could net them factors of billions in returns on the investment? Personally I think it is a feelgood measure. It might cure some very bad diseases and it would certainly make all those abortions more palatable and worthwhile. The honest truth is that this issue is about funding for scientists plain and simple. For the average person who supports it, I suspect they do not know anything about what the real results are, but rather just heard someone on TV saying it was good. To date there have not been any promising results from this research, dispute this fact if you will, but the evidence is on my side.

Can you give me the name of a liberal who has spoken out against adult stem cells. No you can't, for some reason the conservative mind breaks down when confronted with more than one option, oh and whoever mentioned racism in this context has got to be a troll and purposely diminishing the many many times in Y/A that the accusation is absolutely true.

I am not a scientist but this issue seems like it was one that was created by the media. There is more than one way to skin a cat. Throughout the history of man we have had to balance raw scientific capabilities with moral guidelines. This is nothing new.

It seems to me that if the amount of energy that has been focused on changing the stem cell funding laws was actually focused on alternative methods of generating/acquiring stem cells we would be further along in every respect.

The fact of the matter is that adult stem cells do not give scientist the breadth of ability as embryo stem cells. There is a new process that uses ambionic stem cells which gives doctors more ability, but still embryo stem cells are the best cells and scientists can use them to cure the most diseases or to grow almost any organ they want.

Embryo stem cells are not taken out of unborn babies. Instead they are taken out of aborted fetuses, so fetuses are not killed to allow embryo stem cells.

By the way, your article holds no weight because it is from a biased source. I hope you can listen to this interview on NPR, it is very informative. And before you say that NPR is a liberal news-source. It is not.

Actually I believe Liberals may be looking forward to using stem cells from amniotic fluid now. Researchers have found a way to use these stem cells and I believe Liberals would be happy to have an alternative like this. I know I would.

Adult stem cells are NOT the same as fetal stem cells. Stem Cells from Amniotic fluid are not the same as fetal stem cells. With enough research we may find their unique properties and convert them to behaving the same. But the point of your question is divisive in nature, all those damn liberals. The reality is millions of stem cell are destroyed by fertility clinics every week but the misinformation and paranoia of the radical right prevent otherwise common sense people from supporting the use of these cells for research into life saving therapies. BTW the majority of Americans support stem cell research and when the neo-conservatives lose power in 2008 we will scramble to catch up with the rest of the scientific world.

So what you are really saying is that you would prefer that the leftover frozen embryos from invitro fertilization procedures that will never be implanted in a womb to be thrown in the trash can killing them rather than have them used for medical research.

The only other option would be to force people to have every single one of these extra embryos implanted for pregnancy.

When a woman gets an abortion, she can choose to donate the embryo's stem cells or not. Note the word donate...no one is forcing these women to abort their unborn babies or paying money for them.

Freedom of choice is a pillar of America.

I have a friend who was 4 months pregnant when her baby spontaneously died. She chose to donate the embryo and give someone else a chance for a better life.

That makes her and her embryo HEROS

I dunno.

Since everyone seems to think that Bush does everything for oil, maybe I'll say that the liberals are addicted to donations from Planned Parenthood and similar groups.
