Generally, when you add new ram the PC/laptop will automatically detect it. After installing new ram, the machine will start up and show that the memory size in the machine has changed.

You should go into the bios and check the memory size. At start up, the machine will identify what key you need to press in order to access bios option. Ex. F1, F2 or sometimes the DEL key. The memory size will either be in system settings or memory settings. Once you have identified that the memory size is correct save your settings and restart the PC. Once you have done this the machine will boot up with no problems.

If the PC booted up and stated that the memory was incorrect or mismatched you may have the wrong type of memory.

As a MCSE and A+ tech the first respondant is correct, fiddling with the BIOS can throw a monkey wench into the works, the BIOS will tell you how many slots are available and what is already installed.

Find out in the system resources the type you have and then if you have 3 or 4 slots, you can usually install up to 2 to 3 gigs, and if your board can handle dual channel.

The best thing is you work down, if your running FSB and PC2000-3000-4000, at 233, 333 or 433 mz,you can put any of those in, over that in the 533 or 733 mz FSB, you would need to up grade, but the more memory the better, and it speeds up all functions programs and internet.

BIOS settings can be a little complicated, you set them up when the computer starts. It says to press F2 or F5 or del to enter setup, do that and you get to the BIOS settings menu. Navigate through this and set what you want. Be careful, because some settings could wreck things. Consult your motherboard manual for more information.

If you purchased the correct memory for your computer, the BIOS will automatically detect it and use it. You should not have to do anything.
