After 6 months of "we havn't received your work back" from my RE department, I want it back NOW.

Is will sometimes have to be kept for verification purposes but it it is your property and will have to be returned to you after the the qualifaction is complete

This is a difficult point. I used to be Head of a small FE college under the Education Department. The ruling was that work produced in class (eg Art work) belonged to us and that was made clear, but we were not fussy about it.

I'm not sure what RE stands for....

If this is for school, generally you will get the work back.
If this is at your job, check your employment handbook. Many times, any work you develop becomes the property of the company.
