My boyfriend of 6 years and I are breaking up. We have a joint banking acct. Does anyone know what the procedure is to take him off of my acct? Obviously I call the bank but I am wondering if he needs to set up a new acct before they can take him off of it since he has direct deposit? Has anyone else gone through this that can give me some advice? Thanks.

What about direct deposit? What happens to that? Will they route it to each of our new accts until our employer sends it to the new acct?

I believe both of you will have to fill out the necessary forms to get him off since this is a joint account.

for starters, open your new account ASAP & redirect your direct deposit. Dont close it until it hits the other account b/c it can get lost. As a joint owner on the account you will both have to be there to remove the other b/c of the joint interest you share in it. You did not say how good of terms you were on, so we can only assume not the best. But, interestingly enough, just one of you can close the account.

If you dont trust him, then take out your share & start new. When your DD changes, close it or take yourself off.

DD will not be automatically re-routed to the new a/c

You are trying to fix a dead horse (to mix metaphors).

The simplest solution is for YOU to open up a new account and transfer whatever funds are in the joint account that belong to you into the new account.

This way there is no present or past association between your ex BF and your money.

Call your bank and they may be able to set it up over the phone - requiring you only to stop by and sign the paperwork. That way his direct deposit is not affected since the account will be his by default. It will be his problem to remove you from it.

Simple eh???

Write yourself out a check for half in the account and YOU start a new checking account. Make a clean break and move on.

If you have any direct deposits then YOU can call those companies and give them your new info.

Do NOT keep this same checking account, he really shouldn't either. Both of you need to drop it and start new ones, issuing new numbers and checks. You are simply asking for trouble if you don't.

Open a new account. Move all the money from your joint account into the new one. Change your direct deposit too. Your ex will be fine with closing it if there is nothing in it.

The bank will require that both of you sign that you want him off the account and that if it stays open, the account will remain in your name only. Your boyfriend can do whatever he wants to about a new account.

To be thorough, though, you should simply close the account, figure out who gets what share, and open two new and separate accounts, just because if things turn sour and he has your account number, it could get ugly.

Good luck!

If you both go in, the bank can work it out in a variety of ways. However, it is often easier just to go ahead and write a check for your portion of the balance on the account and go open a new account for yourself. That way you are not dependent on his cooperation in getting the accounts all squared away.
