Right now Symbian is holding the 54% percent of total market share of phone business.
Nokia's series 60 largely based phones[N70,N80 etc], and series 80 [9300,9500] and UIQ of Sony ericsson and some few other company use this OS to opertate phones.
Symbian lets us to install softwares on phone by the .sis and .six executable files.
At present its current version is 9.1[9.2 is announced and still to come on 2007 VERY SOON]

Symbian is an operation system made by Nokia Co. and now used by many brands. You recognise it by the compatibility of .sis applications and a bigger screen than other mobiles.
You'll know by examples maybe : Nokia 6600, Nokia N series, Nokia N-Gage, Sony Ericsson P990i are all symbian
