Also, should the posts be wood or shaped concrete? If wooden posts should be used, should they be used with the pointed post 'holders'?

The depth of how far into the ground is directly related to the frost line in your area. I live in Ohio and the frost line is past 2 feet, I have always dug my post holes to 3 ft. to be safe. Pressure treated wood post, 4' x "4" is the right post to use if you want it to last. Put some gravel or stone in the bottom of the hole, set the post and then fill in with concrete. Post should be out no more than the height of your fence, 6ft. per your question.

typically the post should be about the same height as the fence. The post should be1/2 of the height to 2/3 into the ground. So for a 6ft tall fence, should be 3-4 feet in the ground.
Wood posts are easiest to work with, not sure about the "holders"

8 ft post with two feet in the ground. The posts should be pressure treated wood of 4x4 for best results. If you rotate the panels one front side of the posts then one to the back then one to the front. etc. It becomes a friendly neighbor fence and gives it a design. If the panels are redwood wait a couple of weeks and it will turn a real nice color and you can varnish it for weather treating.

Posts need 24" in the ground, typically 8 ft posts are used with 6' fence.

Treated lumber posts are durable if installed correctly; lighter and easier to handle tha concrete pre-casts.

We install lumber post with a cement fill under and fully around the base, and we slope the top of the cement to drain water away from the post base. We don't cap the tops or use bracket mounts.

dont use the pointed post holders they are not strong enough for high winds get 8foot long posts which are four inches by four inches dig down two feet centre and level posts use quickcrete its a quick setting concrete very easy to follow instructions on the packet and leave overnight before you start make sure all your measurements are correct and attach panels using three inch brass screws[they dont rust] every six to eight inches down the post......the job is fairly easy but remember to measure and measure again to make sure everything is correct before you start.....happy fence building been there and did it myself....give yourself a couple of days to do this....hope this helps
