It depends on which site you are downloading them from.

It's VERY easy and there are multiple ways to do it. You can download straight from a certain website called, "Limewire" or you can download torrents. Downloading lets say a movie torrent (I'm sure someone else could better explain) means that you're downloading from several different sources or peoples pc's. So you're not downloading a strait line, it's from several different lines. I can't explain it obviously!

But yes it's copyright infrindgement so copying it IS illegal no matter how you do it. Not many people get caught though.

But here's 2 BIG reasons people do it;

1.) Movies stink nowadays. For every 20 movies made, only 1 is worth the $10 the view just paid to see it.

and

2.) It's a multibillion dollar industry and they STILL rip off the public in ticket & DVD sales. Are they losing money? Yes. Is it a lot? Yes, but not a lot of money to them. If you rake in $10 million a year (at least) what's a couple of $100k?? Nada

think of it this way

your walking down the street and see 100 dollars on the ground do you walk by or pick it up...

the Internet is alot like that there is so much out there to download and so many places to get the movies from it's like finding free money...

ohh and one more thing I can't phucking stand at the start of a movie when you see a guy talking about how people who download movies on the Internet have taken away their jobs (these people are usually the set builders or the painters ect) that's total bullshitt there is not a phucking movie star alive that deserves 30 million a picture that's just for one friggen guy lets put a cap on the amount a movie star can make like a some sports do then everyone will have a job and going out to the movie an paying 8+dollars to get in an 10 bucks for a drink and a popcorn come phucking on this is absolutely stupid no wonder people are downloading movies and will continue to download movies....

I know I will be until things like this change

If you are downloading copyrighted movies/shows from a source not authorized to distribute them, yes it's illegal. If you are paying for downloads/ rentals thru iTunes, Netflix, etc... that is legal because those entities are licensed to do so and the "owners" of the show/series are getting compensation for the licensing distribution.

Using file sharing programs is illegal, because copyrighted material is being distributed without any license from nor compensation being given to the "owners".

It's easy to get a P2P file sharing program for downloading files, and a good part of ISP traffic is from file sharing. Because so many people are doing it, the recording artist and motion picture groups can't go after every single user... so they target the P2P software makers and their servers, and users with a large # of files they are sharing.

PS If you want a decent lead in or tidbit for your story, take a look at how many people on Yahoo answers post asking about where to download "_________" song/movie/show/clip from "for free".

Yes very much so. Its like you make somthing and someone steals it and doesnt tell you. Piracy is very realy and it is happening more and more each day. But rules are made to be broken and im not the one to be hypocritical when it comes to piracy, but to answer your question. It is very illegal to download movies.

Ummm have you been to a movie in a theatre lately? They all have previews saying piracy is illegal.
Movies can only be used for your purpose. They cannot be copied and given to anyone else, paid for or not.

it's illegal. some programs you can get them for free and some you have to pay for them. my dad downloaded a couple of movies years ago and some production studio found out so they sent him a letter of warning. my dad never did it again. but it's like stealing a movie from walmart or a media store, it's illegal no matter what.

You can legally download movies from ITunes. Downloading movies for free is copyright infringement and can get you in a lot of trouble.

Yes it is when the movie is new and has its own rights. Its legal only when you have made the movie and have total right on it.
