All kids are different and you will know when the time is right. I breastfed my oldest for 9 months, my second for 1 year, and my youngest for 15 months. Some people do it longer, some do it less. It is beneficial to breastfeed at least through the first year, but only if you can. I personally don't think children over two need it, but that's your choice to make.

I've decided to respond to the person that gave me a thumbs down for this response. How can you disagree that the decision to wean should be left to the mother to decide? Every day you decide to breastfeed should be commended and it is certainly okay to stop whenever you feel the time is right. You are obviously one of those people who breastfed their children until they were 5. Once again that is your choice, but let everyone else make their own decision.

American Pediatric Association recommends that babies should be breastfed at least until 1 years of age. After that, they can get enough nutrition from other foods, although supplementing them with breastmilk after that age will never harm!
Babies bite when they are no longer hungry, so biting does not indicate that it is time to stop breastfeeding altogether.

My goal was to nurse for one year, but when my son was about 8 months old he seemed to wean himself. It seemed like a natural breaking point so I started him on formula. It was good as I felt like he had really gotten all the benefits from breastfeeding and we didn't have to go through a traumatic weaning stage.

I nursed my first for 13 months and the second for 14 months. My goal for both of them was 1 year. I'm very happy with how it all worked out.

My kids self-weaned at the age of 8 1/2 months. My youngest bit me before, during, and after EVERY feeding. It sucked and I was not enjoying it at all anymore. I think he was saying, "more food, less boob". I would have weaned them at the age of one as it is unnecessary to nurse after that.

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests nursing for AT LEAST 12 months and as long after that as mutually desired by mom and child.
The World Health Organization suggests nursing for at least 2 years, and as long after that as mutually desired.
Every single drop of milk that you are willing and able to give your child is an enormous benefit to both of you.

When they start to bite you! I have no medical expertise to back me up on this, but that was my grandma's rule of thumb and her 7 kids turned out just fine!
