I paused the dvd to have a look and it says nothing at all. Maybe it differs from episode to episode.

$847.63, per the SNPP website, AND it is also said to be NRA4EVER but that's a joke (like $847.63 isn't!). Groening is not a radical right-winger.

Announcer: In the opening credits, what does the cash register say when Maggie is scanned? The cash register says, "NRA4EVER", just one of the hundreds of radical right-wing messages inserted into every show by creator Matt Groening.

It says 847.63, which was the cost a child per month during the first season.

As for NRA4EVR, that was a gag, placed in the '138th Episode Spectacular' by the writers. Which is funny because Matt Groening is the EXACT opposite of that.

It obviously says 847.63

The cash register displays 847.63, which according to Matt Groening, is the average price to raise a baby in 1989, per month.

Sometimes it says, NRA forever and sometimes it just says $634.24.

Most other sources report $847.63 (which is reportedly the cost of raising a child in the usa per month up to the age of 18) and that In "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular", the scanner instead reads "NRA4EVER."

I have heard that the saying changes, just like there are different sentences that Bart is writing on the chalkboard.

$847.63

It was put there as a joke because $847.63 was the reported average cost per month to raise a child when the show first aired.

It rings up a price. 743.57 I believe. I went frame by frame on the DVD to get this so I know it's true.
