During the "normal" monthly cycle, there are about 2 days right in the middle. (I think it is always 13 days BEFORE the start of the "period') when a woman, if she is fertile will have the slippery mucus that is necessary for the sperm to swim up to the fallopian tubes where the egg has to be fertilized. The egg then travels down to the Uterus, and if the body has gotten the message, and the hormonal changes have taken place, the fertilized egg is then "implanted" onto the wall of the uterus. If it is not, then in a few days the body gives up for that cycle, and the lining of the uterus passes off (in the "period")

Within 4 days after having sex, it is still possible. This is because sperm cells can live up to 4 days in your uterus...
For this reason, even though you ovulate in one day only, your fertile period is approximately a week: 3 days before and 3 days after ovulation.
