I am thinking of going to SA this summer, probably Johannesburg. The usual airline search services return nothing under $1700 for roundtrip. I don't care about the number of stops.

It depends which city you are flying from. New York is usually the main gateway out the US. Most airlines can extend their New York fares to all major US cities. Airlines that have services between New York and Johannesburg are:

Air France (AF) through Paris
British Airways (BA) through London
Cathay Pacific Airways (CX) through Hong Kong
Delta Air Lines (DL) direct
Egypt Air (MS) through Cairo
El Al Israel Airlines (LY) through Tel Aviv
Emirates (EK) through Dubai
Iberia (IB) through Barcelona or Madrid
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL) through Amsterdam
Lufthansa German Airlines (LH) through Frankfurt
Malaysia Airlines (MH) through Kuala Lumpur
Olympic Airlines (OA) through Athens
Qantas Airways (QF) through Sydney
Saudi Arabian Airlines (SV) through Jeddah
Singapore Airlines (SQ) through Singapore
South African Airlines (SA) direct or through Dakar
SWISS (LX) through Zurich
TAP Air Portugal (TP) through Lisbon
United Airlines (UA) through Washington
Varig (RG) through Sao Paulo
Virgin Atlantic Airways (VS) through London

I am flying to the states in April, and the cheapest flight I got is on Delta Airlines. I'm not sure how much they would issue you a ticket in the States, but i got mine for R8200 which is about $1170. I was told that the prices will go up by March and may start going up immediately, so I think you should buy soon! Inquire at your nearest travel agency, that's what I did :)
