Q tips are dangerous, you can damage the delicate lining of the nose, impact the dried mucus so it won't come out, make it bleed, who knows what else. Infant saline drops are the best, if you apply them while baby is lying down usually one of 2 things happens: they sneeze and shoot it straight at you (FUN!) or it softens the boogies so then the bulb will suck it out. The saline drops give the bulb syringe something to draw on and help to push the dried stuff out. I'll resort to my pinky nail if it's right at the edge but you don't want to scrape the nasal tissue with your nail either.
A great time to do any of that is right after a nice warm bath because all that moisture helps lubricate things. If baby is sick or you don't feel up to a bath you can even sit in the bathroom with baby with a steamy hot shower running and then try the aspirator.
Good luck! Poor little snotty nose, don't you hate it?

I have a 2 year old and a 4 month old and I never picked either of their noses. My pediatrician warned us never to use Q-tips/fingers in an infant's ears or nose because of the reasons many others have stated (irritation, scratching, cutting). I found that eventually both children expelled dried nasal particles on their own through sneezing.
My advice is to keep your little one's nose as clean as you can. This will prevent things from drying up. Clean it a few times daily with a soft, well moistened washcloth.
Best wishes.

My baby's pediatrician recommended saline nose drops (the unmedicated kind) because we live in a dry climate. Just put a drop into each nostril (which my little guy doesn;'t mind, he hates the aspirator) let it set for a few seconds to moisten the dry boogers, and use the aspirator. Then I use a Q-tip to grab anything the aspirator didn't pull all the way out (his nostrils were too small at first for the Q-tip, but he's grown a little bit). I think the saline will help even if you don't live in a dry climate.

Boy oh boy! Times sure have changed since mine were little! I have them 11 to 17. We would NEVER put a q-tip in a babys nose! What if they squirmed and it got ran up there! I know they said to hold so they don't, but things happen! If your not supposed to put them in the ear, then I would think the nose would be worse! But that's just my opinion. All I ever did was use a wet washcloth and kinda like gently grab the nose hole like you would for wiping and it would come on out. Or at least get out far enough to get it with my fingers. Good luck to you. And please think twice before using a q-tip.

RE:
How do you clean your infant's nose?
I have an aspirator to clean my baby's nose, but that's only good for the wet stuff. The aspirator does not get rid of that dry stuff. How do you 'pick your baby's nose'?

I would recommend getting saline mist. That helps very much. I wouldn't recommend picking your baby nose wit yo finger because you could cut it. Just use the saline mist and the aspirator and plus if he's around 2-4 months, they are gonna have that nasal drip for awhile.

Have a humidifier in the baby's room. The environment is too dry if your baby's nose is too dry. Once you correct the root of the problem than you may proceed to remove mucus with nose aspirator.

I used to use a q-tip but I stopped that. Get some saline drops and that should clear it up. I've provided the site of the product I use. You can find it just about everywhere!
