Why does the sun go on shining
Why does the sea rush to shore?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?--
When you don't love me anymore.

Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?--
It ended when you said goodbye.

I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was.
And I can't understand, no I can't understand
Why life goes on the way it does.

Why do the birds go on singing?
Why do the stars shine above?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?--
It ended when I lost your love.

Don't they know it's the end of the world?--
It ended when you said goodbye.

Because life is not really quite so subjective as this song suggests. This is meant to depict a young person in the throws of disappointment in love. All very well, and we sympathize and all, but we old folks know that life does in fact go on. They hurt, and they get over it. And sometimes find someone nice who helps comfort you.

Notice how I have attempted to avoid all gender pronouns here? Thank you.

I think he knows that the sun and the rest of the world are not going to stop what they are doing merely because "it's the end of the world" for him. He's also not happy about the fact that the Sun, the world, and everyone else is going on with their business instead of stopping and focusing on him. I guess his song will help him realize that it's not really the end of the world--even for him--when he can still see the Sun shining and the birds singing. The world goes on, even after we are buried in the earth. People wil stop what they are doing long enough to bury us, but then they have got to get going again. I guess he will realize that he's not dead, so he has to get going again too.

Some people seem to think the question asks "how" (answering fusion), but it asks "why." And it's a kind of an existential why, where it would not be enough merely to say that's just how it is. Or maybe to the existentialist that is the only honest answer, "That's how it is. It's tough but you have no choice but to deal with it." Why would the sun keep shining when I hurt so much? Answer: The Sun has no feelings. Not for you or anyone else. Maybe "fusion" is the right answer; "It's physics, baby, I can't stop. If you've got feelings about that, then I'm bad news. I don't care a thing about you or anybody." Heart of Stone? Maybe "Heart of Helium" would be a better song title.

Wouldn't it be nice if every time we got hurt, the whole world stopped until we were better. Like when you were a kid and your mom brings you some tea in bed. We can't even get that now, how in the world could we expect the Sun to stop until we're better!
