Traditionally the American President has been considered the most powerful person on the face of the earth for the last 100 years or so. This is because America has the most powerful (though not always put to good use) military and the most destructive weapons known to man. We are the only nation to have ever used a nuclear weapon in anger, and the world has seen the scope of American conquest since the Spanish American war in 1898.
The most powerful person in the western hemisphere and the one who has caused the most change, both good and bad for over 2000 years, would be Jesus Christ. His teachings and those who followed him have led to more upheaval in the world than anyone before or since.

I'd say George W. Bush is not the most powerful person on the earth -- nor is the Pope. Look at where the money comes from and then you find the REAL power on earth.

Bush (or to be more exact, his advisors, most specifically Cheney). That's because the USA is the only global super power, as it has the most powerful military and the biggest economy, and the President is in charge of it.
Any global agreement on trade or the environment isn't as powerful as it could be unless it has US backing, and the president decides what gets that backing.

There is a most powerful person on the planet. His or her identity is a secret. This person is also the richest person in the world. It is not Bill Gates. With all due respect, Mr. Gates is not even in the same league as this wealthiest person financially.

It has to be the President of the United States. Others are also immensely powerful but usually their power is focused in one particular field or industry. The President has power across many spectrums not the least of which is the US military which is unrivaled in its capabilities today.

I'm slightly worried by Bill Gates, or whoever is running MS (please don't be Steve Balmer!).
95%+ of ALL THE WORLD'S COMPUTER'S run on their software (including the one I am writing this on). The power and influence they have is astonishing. And we are going to use more computers in the future too, so they will only get more powerful...
They are unelected, ignore the laws when they want, and earn unbelievable amounts of money. He has the ear of just about any government on the planet and is utterly unaccountable.
