Some women describe the mucous plug as looking more like the mucous in your nose. It may look like a thick glob of stringy mucous, thicker than what you would see with normal vaginal secretions. If you are close to going into labor you may see pink, brown, or red blood around the edges of the mucous plug. This is called the “bloody show”.

You may pass your mucus plug — the small amount of thickened mucus that's sealed your cervical canal during the last nine months — if your cervix begins to dilate as you get close to labor. The plug may come out all at once in a lump, or as increased vaginal discharge over the course of several days. The mucus may be tinged with blood (which may be brown, pink, or red), which is why it's referred to as "bloody show." Having sex or a vaginal exam can also disturb your mucus plug and cause you to see some bloody discharge even when labor isn't going to start in the next few days.

A mucus plug may be clear, slightly pink or blood tinged in color. It may be stringy mucus or sticky discharge. Some women may not even notice the loss of their mucus plug because there is already an increase in vaginal discharge during pregnancy.

I don't mean to sound gross, but the mucus plug IS gross looking when it dislodges. You'll know exactly what it is when you see it, that is if you see it. Many women don't even know they've lost it because it gets washed away in the shower. It's exactly what the name says, "mucus", and it's a chunk of it.

Mine came out in pieces there wasn't any blood, brown or pink. It came out like sorta off white yellowish clumps for awhile and now every one and awhile I get like mucousy discharge but other times I never have discharge.

it can be a little bloody, but it should be a thick substance - this really doesn't mean jack, just let your OB know.
