My ten year old Kenmore dryer stopping heating so clothes they don't dry. Any idea what the problem might be and the cost to repair? I called sears and it's $69 an hour plus parts to have them come out or $169 for a 1 year warranty and repair. Would it be better to buy a new one and are the new GAS dryers really more energy efficient?

The new gas dryers are not any more energy efficient today than they were 10 years ago. If you do not like the price of having someone from Sears come out to service your dryer you may be able to find a reliable independent servicer for less.

Make sure the vent is not kinked or blocked because it could make it seem that you are not getting heat and it will take a long time to dry. If the vent is clear you could have a bad thermal fuse, a bad ignitor, bad lifting coils on the valve, a bad thermostat, a burned off wire, a bad timer and a few other things.

Have a qualified gas man check it out. I can name a whole lot of things that it could be, but you probably still would be no better off. Besides 10-12 yrs old is not worn out.& you will find the older models are longer lasting than the new ones My mother is using a gas dryer for about 35 yrs with not a whole lot of trouble. More than likely it is a faulty ignitor or flame sensor. If that is your only problem i would have it repaired.

Try cleaning the air duct that is on the outside of the house. Be sure it is not clogged with lint and that air can flow freely. It makes a huge difference. Also, remove your lint screen and remove the lint and wash the screen with soap and water. Dryer sheets leave a coating on the lint screen and air won't circulate as freely when it is coated (to test it yourself, run water over the screen before you clean it and the water will probably run off the screen. Once you clean it with soap and water, the water will flow through it). The same thing happened to me once and before I jumped the gun and assumed it was a heating element or a bigger problem, I simply unclogged the lint on the vent outdoors and it heated again just fine. Good luck.

Hi..I would say just to go buy a new one..They are so much more engery efficient now..I had this happen to my dryer about 5 years ago..wouldn't heat up, it was the heating element that went bad..It was 50.00 for the heating element, then 65.00 per hour for them to put it in..Hubby could have done it but he happened to be OOT at the time..Anyhow i figure my dryer was about 12 years old at the time, So i just went and bought a new one..You can buy a good one for 200.00-250.00
Good Luck

It sounds like the heating element. Call a repairman.
