Nipples, like toes get cold much easier than core parts of the body. Because these are "non-essential" extremities the body reduces the amount of warm blood that goes to these parts of the body when the external temperature is cold. This warm blood is diverted to important organs like the heart and lungs. Because the loss of this warm blood leaves nipples open to freezing they constrict to prevent further heat loss.

A baby can't suck anything out of a nipple that is hard and tightened from the cold. Once this is understood the baby will not be brought out in an environment that will make it sick.

Not sure......but I suspect knowing the bodies ability for miricles.....its as simple as a way in which the body protects that part of the body from temperatures that are not normal for that area..........but you have to admit another interesting side affect is the way it turns guy's on :-)............hmmmm and when that action takes place lets face it the body warms up :-)

It decreases surface area so heat loss is lessened. The hardening is caused by capillaries contracting, the same thing that causes goose bumps.

im guessing the grow a thick layer to keep body temperature warm... or it may be that the sensors.... just react to the weather and do the reverse in order to keep the body warm
