Thrush

What is thrush?
Thrush is a yeast infection in the mouth and throat of babies. It occurs in 2 to 5 percent of babies and is more common in premature babies. Thrush is usually caused by the organism Candida albicans, a common organism in adults. Babies usually contract the organism from the mother's body during delivery and may develop thrush as early as 2 weeks old. The yeast is common in the environment. It only causes a problem when it grows in warm, moist environments.

Good Luck sweetheart

Thrush appears as white patches inside the baby's mouth and on the tongue and lips. Some babies have no symptoms of thrush while others have pain and fussiness and may refuse to feed. Babies with oral yeast infections may also develop a diaper rash caused by the same organism.

Treatment for thrush:
Treatment of thrush depends on whether the infection is causing a problem for the baby. A mother breastfeeding a baby with thrush may also develop the infection on her nipples, which may cause pain. Treatment for oral thrush in breastfed babies should include treatment of the mother's nipples. The most effective treatment for thrush is an antifungal medication. A simple, yet often effective, treatment is with a purple medication called gentian violet, which is painted inside the baby's mouth.

It does sound an awful lot like Thrush. If it is thrush your child's mouth will have a sweet odor, not unlike that of bread, which is caused by the yeast. The treatment is only available by prescription and is a thick liquid (syrup) that your child will likely take several times a day.
If you are anything like me ( I have 3 kids and one on the way) the cause is likely that you have not killed the bacteria in the nipples or bottles for your baby. I know with my second (and 3rd) I was somewhat lax with boiling the bottles and nipples. Instead I relied on the soap in my dishwater to kill the microbes. Of course, it did not work and my kids ended up with thrush. My middle has had it twice and my youngest had it once. WIth this baby I have a new house and a dishwasher that heats the water to a temperature high enough to kill the germs. I also have a sterilizer.

In my experience it looks really bad for a day or two after treatment, with patches of the white coming off in your childs mouth. After this it clears up rapidly with no ill effects. Continue the medication even though it looks all cleared up. WIth my middle child I thought to save some of it in case he ever got it again and he did, one week later when it came back :)

It sounds very much like thrush. Talk to the doctor. They will give you a medicine to clear it out. Thrush is a yeast infection and can occur after or during a treatment of antibiotics or for other reasons, not necessary only in breast fed babies.

We have the same thing happen and looked it up on the internet and starting freaking out about thrush. Thrush is characterized by white patchs that looks like curdled milk.

Our son had a uniformly white tongue (looked like a coating from drinking milk). Our pediatrician said it was dehydration.

It could be thrush and you should take the baby to the doctor so you can get medicine to get rid of it. And make sure you clean all of the toys he plays with and if he has a pacifier you should throw that one away that he uses and get him a new one.

It's Thrush, and he needs to see the doctor because he will need an antibiotic to clear it up.

Yes, it could be thrush(he doesn't have to be breast feeding to acquire this) or some other mouth infection - get him to the doc and get it checked out.

It's thrush most likely. The doctor can give him a rx for it.
