I was able to quit "cold turkey" without any aide. I have been smoke free for 10 years and loving it. I hate the smell of smoke and stay as far away from it. Your mouth stinks, your hair stinks, your hands stink, your teeth get yellow, it induces the quicker appearance of wrinkles. When you take a puff you make a very unpleasant face gesture, which is not sexy at all....
You need to get rid of all the ashtrays in your home because the smell of stale cigarrette buds will make you crave for it. Also, you will need to get a dental cleaning to eliminate the nicotine from your mouth because the taste will make you crave for it. These are just two little details that you should not forget if you decide to quit.
Your main concern will be to switch the habit of having something in your mouth with something else. Some people use chewing gum, others pop candy into their mouths each time they have a craving. You can do either but get the sugarless kind so you won't gain weight. Also try to exercise, and you will see how messed up your lungs are after trying to jog for a couple of minutes. This will help you understand the mess you are making of your body
remember this, you are making the cigarrette manufacturers rich and you are getting more sick with each cigarrette. They vacation with the money you put into their companies while you will be in a hospital bed with a pulmonary disease.
It's all in your will power and desire to be healthy for yourself and extend your life a bit longer for your family and kids. You can do it; if I did it, anybody can........

I was unable to quit with them. I quit cold turkey style twice, the second time has been the longest some 6 years as to the first 2 years , I smoked more then 20 overall and had bad lungs, really bad, now they are very healthy, I have the lung capacity of a 20 year old athlete my doctor told me just last month and I am nearly 50 years old, I swim and pump iron, bike, etc... it is great being free of the nasty cig habit that cost me so much money and health. It is hard the first 3 days then lessens, and at a week then at two weeks, then at a month but thereafter it was pretty simple, I had quit.

I actually managed to quit for 6 years, but started back. I know, what a dummy!! But the craving never left me in all that time, I just some how managed to control it. When I went through my first divorce is when I started smoking again and have been ever since. One thing I found that helped me a little bit was chewing on straws. I like to smoke when I'm driving so I always had a straw that I could hold in my fingers in place of the cig, when the urge got really strong I just chewed on the straw. Sounds crazy, I know, but it did help. I'm thinking of trying to quit again because they've just gotten so darn expensive, not to mention how bad they are for our health.

YEP! I quit smoking almost 2 years ago. Funny story...I was fine emotionally for the first 15 days, but on day 16, I don't know what happened! From the second I got up that morning I was bawling my fool head off. I cried all the way to the shower, I cried in the shower, I couldn't put on makeup because I was crying, I cried all the way to work, I cried walking past my boss, I sat at my desk and cried. Everyone was like, what the he!! is wrong with you!!??? I kept saying, nothing's wrong, I'm not sure why I'm crying, I just can't stop! My boss sent me directly to the doctor. I cried all the way there, I cried in the lobby, I cried on the scale, and I cried in the room. (it really was pretty funny now that I think back) He explained that my body was finally really letting go of smoking. The nicotine was completely gone from my system and my mind simply wasn't quite sure how to deal with it! He presribed a mild sedative to help me stop crying and so I took that for a couple days. It worked. It's very common to be depressed after quitting. It goes away after a week or 2, I swear. Just stick with it. If you are TRULY ready to quit, you will. You have to be ready! Think of every reason why you want to quit. For me, it was because I had started dating again and I was sick of wondering, oh gee what if he doesn't smoke, will he smell it on me, what if he wants to kiss and I smell like an ashtray! Silly maybe, but it worked. Think of every single reason and keep saying them. Rememer, you have to quit COMPLETELY. You can't just have one, or only smoke when you drink or whatever. It sucks so bad to quit, but once you do you will feel amazing!!!

I was given some terrific advise for quitting. I was a heavy smoker (averaging 1 to 1 1/2 packs a day), started at the age of eleven!, and I really enjoyed smoking. I ws told "don't set yourself up by setting a deadline for yourself". Because, just like most people dieting, or whatever, as soon as you give yourself a deadline then you'll start craving it even more. Instead, use the power of positive thinking to change a negative situation: everytime you go to reach for your cigarette tell yourself things like "Gee I can't wait until I feel healthy again." or "I'm going to feel so much better once I quit smoking." and other similar positive messages to yourself. As corny as it sounds, this really does work. What will happen is that you'll get into the habit of saying these positive things to yourself DOZENS of times a day (everytime you reach for your smoke - even if it's picking it up from the ashtray). And then one day, anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 months or so later, you'll go to reach for a cigarette and realize that you're done! You've just quit smoking - permanently!
My moment came about 2 o'clock one afternoon , after about 2 months of positive self talk. I still had 3/4 of a pack left and I just knew I was done. I was afraid to throw out the rest of my smokes in case I just couldn't handle it. And, yes, I cheated. But I'd read that the actual physical craving for a cigarette lasts only about 60 seconds. So many times I'd sit holding a cigarette and forcing myself to wait the minute or so to see if I still wanted it. I actually found myself getting really angry at the cigarette companies for marketing to children and for selling such a distuctive product (I had started when I was 11 and quit when I was 37). Sometimes I would simply have to have a shot of nicotine and would hang my head out the window (so my kids wouldn't know I was cheating) and savour a couple of drags. I found that I only wanted a drag or two and after a few weeks it just started tasting bad. I kept the rest of the pack of smokes as a reminder that "I did it!" for a long time.
I believe this technique comes from NLP (Neurolinguistic Programing) which is essentially reprograming your brain to see a negative in a positive way - making you WANT to make the change. It worked beautifully for me.

A lot of people do it, but here is my strategy. I ordered an extra-large meat lovers pizza, and while it was on its way, I went in my backyard and did sprints until it showed up. You'll probably cough a lot. Eat as much of the pizza as you can, then smoke a lucky strike in 3 drags. You'll be puking for about 20 minutes, and since then a cigarette hasn't been all that appealing. I'm actually not kidding, it is VERY unpleasant but it works.

Go ahead, you may be lucky & you may not.
My 33 yr. old nephew died 6 mos. after he found he had lung cancer & the Dr. said it was due strickly to smoking.
My husband could not quit for me or our 5 children (now grown and not smoking) and then he had big time heart surgery. He never picked up another ciggarette. His breath is so much nicer now. Cold turkey, best way.He is alive & well, Praise God !!!
My oldest son always said he would just as soon kiss a dirty ash tray as a girl that smokes.
You have a choice now , and you will get real depressed when you get lung cancer and wish you had not made the choice to just keep smoking for the rest of your life. God Bless You ~~~

I used to smoke, chew, dip, and drink and quit each one of them cold turkey. I was addicted, but I got to the point where I felt disgusted by it all and just quit. As far as cigarettes go, I smoked my last cigarette and looked at my pack of Marlboro Reds and through them in the trash and never looked back. One way to help you with quitting is to turn your life into a life of exercise and good food. The better you feel the less likely you will want to pick up smoking again. I enjoyed cigarettes to a point, but they did make me feel like crap. Also the bad breath and stinky fingers. You can quit! I am sure of it. Go for it!
